| Railway to introduce e-payment for freight | | | New Delhi | Oct 29 After e-ticketing, the Indian Railways are all set to introduce electronic payment system for the freight sector. E-payment of freight has already been implemented in the coal sector in East Coast Railways, particularly coal booked for Badarpur powerhouse, said V N Mathur, Member Traffic, Railway Board. "There is a need to focus on the use of information and communication technology to the core activities of the railways. E-payment is part of it," Mathur said speaking at a seminar on "Rediscovering Railways Through Information and Communication Technology" here today. Freight operations and passenger reservation are other areas where there is a need for extensive use of IT to maximise the utilisation of coaches, wagons and locomotives, he said. "We are exploring possibilities to make unreserved tickets available without the need to wait in long queues. Central Railway is experimenting with contact less smart cards for its suburban section where the smart cards itself becomes the authority to travel," Centre for Railway Information System (CRIS) Managing Director Madhav Pathak, said. Indian Railways is one of the largest provider of transportation services in the world. "We carry about 15 million passengers - about the population of Australia - over 2 million tons of freight every day - over the length and breadth of India," Pathak said. Some of the major IT projects currently undertaken by the CRIS are IT application in budgeting and accounting, asset maintenance, procurement and inventory, human resource management and data warehousing. |
