Sleaze accused convene 'cabinet'
Efforts to devise strategy for joint defence

Jammu | Oct 29: With the Central Bureau of Investigation loosing its pace of probe in the Srinagar sex scandal, the powerful brand of accused in the case are reported to have convened a brainstorming meeting to defend themselves.
Highly placed sources told EARLY TIMES that around eight powerful politicians, police officers and businessmen named in the infamous Srinagar sex scandal had a meeting at a common place in Srinagar to chalk out a strategy for their defence. The CBI team which is camping at a police guest house in Srinagar is yet to summon any of them even though some other people have been questioned in this connection to strengthen the case.
Sources said that the meeting convened late last week at the behest of a Police officer of the rank of an SP had at least three legislators other police officers against whom the CBI has been asked by the High Court to move swiftly. The meeting which was held twice last week, sources said, arrived at a conclusion to chalk out a joint strategy for defence.
Even though none of the accused had the courage to question the judgment of the Division Bench of the Jammu and Kashmir Court which laid strict guidance for the CBI to move against the accused but they are learnt to have zeroed in on some loopholes in the investigation. The team of powerful accused persons has also sought legal opinion in interpretation of the order and some documents were being collected as a weapon defence.
"The CBI had put before the High Court a 25 page status report on the investigation which says that there was no substantial evidence against the persons named in the latest list", said source quoting an accused. Quoting further an accused, the source said, "the High Court order has mentioned the CBI report in just three paragraphs which does not fully explain the status of investigation".
The accused named in the second list are also making a case of release of the third list as well. "We have some information that the third list carries names of around 270 persons and majority of them are top politicians, officers and other people at responsibly position in the public life".
A source said that the accused people will be meeting once again in Jammu in the second week of November after getting the legal opinion for their defence. It is learnt that the police officers named in the sex scandal were pampering the politicians to use their good connections and public support to scuttle the case.
