| Kashmiri separatists plan to repeat poll boycott exercise | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | Nov 1 While the mainstream political parties are engaged in pre-poll campaign in Jammu and Kashmir, hardliners among the separatists, headed by Syed Ali Shah Geelani, have begun anti-poll campaign. Geelani has given a call to people for boycotting the election whenever it was held next year. He has said that Assembly election was not substitute for the right of self-determination which people had not been given so far even when it was provided in the UN resolution on Kashmir. On the other hand moderates among the separatists have not yet discussed the issue regarding their participation in the election. The "APHC leadership will discuss the matter at an appropriate time,"said Prof. Abdul Gani Bhat.He said today "one thing is clear that we may not participate the election' adding "we can either consider taking part in the poll process or avoid giving a poll boycott call to the people if the Government of India Implemented Pakistan President Gen. Parvez Musharraf's four-point proposal on Kashmir." Prof. Bhat said that "several elections have been held since 1952 but they failed to settle the Kashmir issue. Hence we believe that once the Kashmir problem was resolved peace would be restored to the state. "He said let the border remain open for free travel, let there be joint management, self-governance and let Kashmir be a demilitarized zone. Democratic Freedom Party Chief,Mr Shabir Ahmed Shah said that his party will not take part in the election.” Yes we could think of taking part provided the election was held under the supervision of UN observers or under the supervision of prominent intellectuals and jurists in India He and Prof. Bhat were of the opinion that there was more need for India to accelerate the pace of dialogue with Pakistan and for resumption of talks with Kashmiri separatists so that a solution was found to the ticklish issue than holding the election which could again prove purposeless and simply aimed atforming a Government. They said enough blood had flowed down the Jehlum river and it was time that multipurpose and multidirectional talks were held at the bilateral and trilateral levels for ensuring end to the blood bath. |
