Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Patron, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today said that his party has transformed the political discourse in Jammu & Kashmir by piloting successfully and with conviction the crucial issues concerning the State and its people.
Addressing an impressive public meeting here, Sayeed said the emerging positive and feasible scenario, propelled by the pro-people policies of the PDP, has set the trend for the ultimate and amicable resolution of the larger Kashmir issue. He said whatever issues PDP raised including opening of traditional road links, ensuring relief to the people in the security measures and the reduction of troops, the party has had a success that eluded earlier attempts. He said the driving force for the PDP's endeavors was the public support, without which the party could have not achieved much. "We have still a lot to accomplish in the interest of the people of the State and our struggle would continue for that," he said.
Putting the Srinagar-Delhi relations in their historical perspective, Sayeed said the dialogue between the State and the Center on earlier occasions had resulted in only Jammu & Kashmir conceding something without getting anything substantial for its people. "The process began in 1952, when as a result of Delhi Agreement the Instrument of Accession was diluted and powers transferred from the State to the Center, rather than other way round," he said and added that similarly the 1975 accord formalized the erosion of the State's autonomy.
Contrary to these historical aberrations, Sayeed said the agenda of PDP had met with considerable success, though much more was still to be struggled for and achieved to fully restore the dignity of the State and its people. He said the Self-Rule and the complete political and economic empowerment of the people of the State in a positively evolving Indo-Pak arrangement is the party's final goal, which is more in sight today than ever before.
Sayeed said though the full potential of the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road was yet to be tapped, the beginning of the bus service on it has broken the decades of intransigence on both sides and it is now only a matter of time when all the regions of the State will have access across the Line of Control and the international border restoring the people the right to travel freely that they had prior to partition.
Similarly, Sayeed said the vacation of the civilian properties by the security forces by November 30 is the beginning of a process that would restore to the civil society its full authority and expand the space for the political and the democratic forces to fully assert and govern as per the people's wishes. He said a beginning as been made and time is not far away when the people of Jammu & Kashmir would once again enjoy the fruits of peace and prosperity away from the fear of all kinds of guns.
Speaking on the occasion, senior PDP leader, Muzaffar Hussain Baig said that PDP's alliance with Congress is guided by certain principles and it is not merely a power-sharing arrangement. He said the PDP would respect and continue in the alliance as long as the coalition delivers on its commitment to restore and uphold the honor and dignity of the people, which is our main agenda. "We would not be there in the alliance even for a minute if we feel that the interests of the people are being compromised," he said and added that realizing the ground realities, the Government of India, despite all the pulls and pressures from various quarters, has started moving positively on the crucial issues of troops reduction and revocation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA).
PDP leaders Peer Mohammad Hussain, Basharat Bukhari and Peerzada Mansoor Hussain also addressed the meeting.
