| We are committed to protect human rights: Army | | | Early Times Reporter

The Army on Thursday said it was dedicated and committed to protect and respect human rights of civilians in the militancy affected areas in Jammu and Kashmir.
"Indian Army is highly dedicated and committed to protect and respect human rights," Commander of Srinagar-based 15 Corps Lt Gen A S Sekhon said at a seminar in Pulwama district.
Sekhon said upholding the human dignity and personal values and mitigation of collateral hardship of the public are the corner stones of the army's professional ethos while operating in militancy affected areas.
He said every person has the right to life, liberty and security. "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reasons and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood," he said.
Senior officials of army, civil administration, lawyers and local journalists, who participated in the seminar, were of the opinion that disregard or contempt for human rights could never help achieve the goals. Human rights, when protected by rule of law, ensure peace and prosperity of society, they said.
Among others who attended the seminar included Budgam Deputy Commissioner Khawja Farooq Ahmed Renzu, member of the State Human Rights Commission Habibullah Bhat and Additional Solicitor General Anil Bhan.
