| Special Olympics constitutes J&K chapter | | | Early Times Reporter JAMMU | Nov 1 With an aim to spread the Special Olympics movement in Jammu and Kashmir, the Special Olympics Bharat today launched its J&K Chapter in this part of the country by setting up a body comprised of people from different walks of life. An international organization, the Special Olympics is dedicated to empowering individuals with intellectual disabilities to become physically fit and productive through sports training and competition. The Special Olympics offers children and adults with intellectual disabilities year-round training and competition in 30 Olympic-type summer and winter sports. This was stated by the National Director of Special Olympics Bharat, Gr. Capt. Colly de Souza while talking to newsmen here this morning. As claimed by the National Director, Special Olympics currently serve 2.5 million people with intellectual disabilities in more than 200 programs in 170 countries. In reply to a question, the Director said that children and adults with intellectual disabilities who participate in Special Olympics develop improved physical fitness and motor skills, greater self-confidence and a more positive self-image. Earlier, state chapter president and a social worker, Dr Ashvini Jojra introduced the National Director with the distinguished audience and also gave a brief note of the activities planned for the state. The state chapter committee for the Special Olympics consists of Prof M R Puri, patron, Ram Sahai, chairman, Sat Paul Verma, advisor-in chief, Sukesh Arora, advisor, Kanwal Kishore Gandotra, convenor, Er. Mahesh Kinth, area director/secretary, Dr Jai Kumar Sharma and Dr O P Bhagat, experts in mental retardation, Nasreen Khan, Hardip Singh Gill, Ashok Kumar, sports directors/ experts, Esther William, treasurer, Harbans Lal Dogra and Gurcharan Singh, special athlete member. |
