New Delhi | Nov 2

The Cabinet today sanctioned Rs 8,000 crore as central assistance for flood control measures in various states.
The central assistance would be to the extent of 90 per cent for special category states, including North-East, Jammu and Kashmir and other hilly areas, and 75 per cent for the non-special category states, Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi told reporters.
There would be an allocation of Rs 3,600 crore for the states outside the basins of the Ganges and the Brahmaputra, he said.
The decision redeems a major pledge made in the National Common Minimum Programme (NCMP) of the UPA government, the Minister said.
Immediately after becoming the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh had set up a task force to suggest measures for dealing with recurring floods in various parts of the country.
