| Governor calls for concerted drive to combat cancer | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | Nov 2 Expressing concern over growing cancer disease in Jammu and Kashmir, Governor Lt Gen (Retd) S.K Sinha today called for concerted drive to combat this dreaded malady. Inaugurating the International Conference on Medical Physics at SKICC, the Governor quoted statistics and said that 1128 new cases were identified from April to October this year. “This is alarming and medical professionals face to meet the challenge”, he added. The Governor said that detection at primary stage can save lives and therefore awareness about the disease is also imperative. He said much progress has been made in the diagnosis and treatment of this disease but still much is required to be done. In this context, the deliberations at the conference would held in formulating effective strategy to combat the disease. General Sinha, who is also chairman Shiv Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, said that a prestigious Medical Institute of Excellence is being set up by the Board at Katra, which will render useful service to the needy. The Rs. 100 crore cancer hospital, he said, will be fully funded by the Board without any assistance from central and state government or any other organization. In all 250 Scientists/doctors who are involved in the treatment of cancer abroad and prestigious Institutes of the country viz. Tata Memorial Cancer Institute, Mumbai, AIIMS, New Delhi, Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Insititute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow, Bhaba Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai, PGI, Chandigarh, Apollo Hospitals, Kidwai Memorial Institute Bangalore, Defence Science Lab. Jodhpur, Russai, USA, Muscat and Germany are attending this conference. Professor A. H Zargar, Director, Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Srinagar and Ex-Officio Secretary to Government of Jammu and Kashmir welcomed the delegates and emphasized the need of Medical Physics for a most modern cancer centre in the state of Jammu and Kashmir and described the facilities that exist in the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, Srinagar. He also emphasized the importance of Radiation Protection in a tertiary care hospital where we are using sealed and unsealed radio-active material for patient diagnosis and care. In his Presidential address Professor S.K Koul, President Association of Medical Physicists of India thanked his Excellency for having spared his time from his very busy schedule for inauguration of this conference. He also thanked Professor A. H. Zargar, Director, SKIMS, Srinagar and Ex-Officio Secretary to Government of Jammu and Kashmir and state Government for hosting this conference in the Silver Jubilee Year of SKIMS, Srinagar. He also mentioned that the first conference was held in 1982 when the Institute was in its infancy and second in 1983 when the Institute was commissioner and now in 2007 this conference is being held in its Silver Jubilee of the Institute and is attended by Specialists from all corners of the Country and Russia, Muscat, Germany and USA. Giving the brief history of Association he mentioned during the last 30 years the membership of the Association has risen from 18 to more than 1000 and the Medical Physicists are looking after Medical Physics needs of the best hospitals in the world and some of them have established Medical Physics centres in Common Wealth Countries. He emphasized the augmentation of equipment in Nuclear Medicine and Radiotherapy departments of SKIMS, Srinagar. He also mentioned that there is dire necessity for a Nuclear Medicine department in Government Medical College, Srinagar and in Government Medical College, Jammu. The urgency of having a National Institute of Radiation Sciences on the pattern of International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Italy was also emphasized by him where short term and long term training programs are available for Radiologists, Radio-therapists, Nuclear Medicine Specialists for diagnosis and treatment. He asked the younger colleagues of Medical Physics to take projects on cost analysis of investigations and therapy keeping in view the exorbitant amount patients have to pay for each investigation. The Association will also try to get the finance for these projects from National and International funding agencies. He also requested the government to arrest the exodus of highly skilled Physicists and technologists to green pastures by providing them wonderful career prospectus and cadre based services. His Excellency in his inaugural address thanked Lt. General (Retd) LP Sadhotra, (AVSM), PHSS for attending this Conference. He thanked Prof A. H. Zargar, Director for hosting this conference in the valley during the silver jubilee year of the Institute. Wonderful tributes were also paid to Prof S.K. Koul., President, Association of Medical Physicists of India for Managing to organize this conference. He also thanked the distinguished delegates coming from all over the country and abroad for participation in the Conference to discuss and practice new modalities of prevention of cancer “dreaded and deadly disease” in every part of the World and wished success to the conference. On this occasion Mr. Fayaz Ahmad Kaloo, Editor and Patron, Greater Kashmir, Srinagar was felicitated by Governor for his contribution in spreading cancer awareness program in the valley mentioning, in his paper always the seven dangerous signals of the cancer to kindly help for the Cancer Society of Kashmir, on behalf of Association of Medical Physicists of India. On the occasion, memento’s were presented by the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir to Professor A.H. Zargar, Director, SKIMS, Srinagar and Ex-Officio Secretary to Government of Jammu and Kashmir, Lt. General (Retd) LP. Sadhotra. (AVSM), PHSS and Professor W.H Andrabi, organizing Secretary AMPICON 2007 on behalf of the Association of Medical Physicists of India. Prof. S. K Koul, President Association of Medical Physicists of India presented memento to His Excellency Lt. General (Retd) S. K. Sinha, (PVSM), Governor of Jammu and Kashmir. Professor W.H. Andrabi, Organizing Secretary presented vote of thanks. |
