| ICL’s offer to J&K Govt causes ripples in BCCI, JKCA | | | SANJEEV SHARMA Jammu | Nov 3 First JKCA took it as a prank played by the Sports Minister Babu Singh but then realizing that minister meant serious business, the moneyed cricket body has embarked on refurbishing available stadium besides contemplating plans to construct another in the winter capital. Sports Minister Babu Singh had recently said that J&K Government intends to rent out two stadiums to cricket bodies of the country ostensibly hinting at ICL. To ward off the possible competition from ICL and its ramifications on JKCA, the latter has contemplated plans to raise its own independent infrastructure in the state, well informed sources disclosed to SAN. They said, to the wake up JKCA has initiated construction work on two stadiums of Jammu and Srinagar. The JKCA has already initiated repair work at the Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium after getting possession of land transferred from Amar Singh Club in the recent past. Though the stadium had been existing since long but the land belonged to Amar Singh Club. Now JKCA has got the proprietary rights of the land. In case of Jammu where JKCA doesn’t own a cricket stadium, it has identified a piece of land at Sidhra. “Paper work has been completed by the Association with the active cooperation of the Jammu wing and the file containing important revenue papers seeking transfer of land on JKCA’s name has already been placed before the General Administration Department (GAD) of the Civil Secretariate,” sources told SAN. Confirming this to SAN JKCA general secretary Salim Khan said, “Without further delay JKCA has decided to start the construction work on the two stadiums. While work on refurbishing existing Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium Srinagar is underway, the construction work on ultra-modern cricket stadium in Jammu shall start any time.” For Jammu stadium, the JKCA has already given the green signal to a piece of land at Bian Bajalta near Sidhra, 15 kilometers from here, offered by the Government. In fact the land for cricket stadium is part of the proposed sports village in Jammu on 865 Kanals of land. “We are waiting for the transfer of land in favour of JKCA, which is a pre-requisite for the Board for Control of Cricket India (BCCI) to release the funds,” Khan said and added that hopefully the land shall soon be transferred to JKCA after the Darbar Move offices start working in Jammu. “We expect that the construction work would start before December,” he said. It may be recalled here that BCCI since long had sanctioned a sum of Rs 6 crores to be utilized for raising an exclusive cricket stadium in Jammu. A sum of Rs 2 crores were kept for purchasing the land and the rest for raising the infrastructure. Soon after the BCCI announced funds JKCA president Dr Farooq Abdullah had made few sorties on the banks of Tawi River in Bhagwati Nagar but things didn’t materialise then. It is pertinent to mention here that the rebel group--Indian Cricket League (ICL), which has created ripples in BCCI, approached the J&K Government expressing desire to hold tournaments in two stadiums at Jammu and Srinagar in lieu of financial gains. The cash strapped state sports ministry took the proposal seriously. |
