Amidst a tug of war between the coalition partners, not only the indications are dropped for surcharged mood for assembly elections when the schedule due is still a year away, even the candidates are being publicly finalized.
Peoples Democratic Party patron and former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed to who addressed a public meeting at Jandayal in Nagrota constituency surprised all present there when he said his party leader Ved Mahajan should get the support at "appropriate time".
Mufti's appeal to the people at a public meeting clearly indicates that the Peoples Democratic Party has already shortlisted its candidates for various assembly constituencies and now grounds are being prepared for their effective campaigning. What adds more significance to this statement is the fact that Nagrota is such a constituency where the PDP has many aspirants in queue and in such a scenario naming one as the party candidate reflects that choices have been clearly made out. This happens only when any political party has made all necessary preparations and ground calculations for embarking in the elections.
"Mufti impressed upon the people in the constituency to support PDP MLC Ved Mahajan and ensure his victory whenever he seeks a mandate", later said an official statement issued by the party.
The Nagrota constituency on the outskirts of Jammu city is perhaps the only assembly segments in Jammu district (though a major part of it now falls in Samba district) where PDP expects some chunk of votes. The other party aspirant in this constituency is Shanti Devi. Mahajan is currently a sitting Member of Legislative Council while Devi is a nominated Member of the Legislative Assembly.
A local hotelier, who is also an active PDP leader, Ashiq Hussain Khan is also a stakeholder for the Nagrota constituency but Mufti has today made it clear that Mahajan was the number one party option.
Others who spoke on the occasion included Minister for Agriculture Abdul Aziz Zargar, Minister of state for Power Peer Minister of state for Education Manjeet Singh, MLC Ved Mahajan, MLC Murtaza Khan, Hassan Mohammed, Bagh Hussain, Mohammed Hussain and Shanti Devi. |
