| State in the grip of poll fever | | | Early Times Reporter JAMMU | Nov 5 Although elections are due late next year poll fever is gripping Jammu and Kashmir amid growing rift between the Congress and PDP, the two dominant coalition partners, in the state. Leaders of the two parties are publicly criticising each other. While PDP patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed expressed displeasure over dismal performance of Ghulam Nabi Azad led government publicly, the latter in a veiled reference to the PDP cautions people in his speeches against hollow slogans of the politicians. Besides sitting legislators including ministers of both the parties as well as opposition National Conference, prospective candidates are visiting their constituencies and holding public meetings almost daily giving credence to the reports of possible mid-term polls in the state. Elections in the state are scheduled next October as the last poll was held in 2002. The life of the state assembly is of six years in the state. The PDP and the NC have publicly told party cadres to remain ready for the polls and even started the exercise of selecting candidates. However, Congress which is heading the coalition is confident of completing the full term in the government. Even if the PDP withdraws support, the Congress government would complete its the full term, senior Vice President of Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Abdul Gani Vakil said. |
