An unofficial survey has indicated that Kashmiri Pandits, living in exile in Jammu and elsewhere, have, during the last 19 years, concentrated on construction of shrines and temples instead of catering to the needs and requirements of widows and orphans.
The survey has revealed that there were more than 600 widows and orphans, several among them being the victim of militancy and the rest having become destitues after their bread earners died as a result of snakebites, heat and sun stroke.According to the survey,a large number of Kashmiri migrants died of cancer, renal failure, cardiac problem.Others because of diabetes and hypertension. The survey has said that diabetes, hypertension and renal problems have hit the displaced people like a plague.
And the most surprising aspect was the no NGO or Kashmiri Pandit organization has established an orphanage for the widows, ailing people and orphans. After the collapse of joint family system the fast disintegration of even small families have left scores of aged men and women unattended because their children being settled outside Jammu. There are many who have been almost abandoned by their children and they could have not been victims of isolation and deprivation has there been an orphanage.
Despite some concessions given to Kashmiri displaced youths who have been seeking admission in professional colleges a large number of them have failed to find entry in the professional colleges because of resource crunch.A couple of overseas organizations have been sending huge sums of money, one such organization has earmarked Rs.40 lakhs annually, for scholarship to deserving and meritorious poandit students.
However,in the absence of any transparency groups of students from the displaced community have received scholarship money while those who were deserving were left out.Prominent intellectuals have demanded that the screening of students for scholarship should be done by a committee of experts and the members of the committee should be changed after every two years to prevent growth of vested interest. They also have suggested to the community leaders to take in hand steps for establishing orphanages on the pattern some organizations have set up in the Kashmir valley.
The Yateem Khana run by Muslim Welfare Society and Rahat Ghar have been doing a great job in providing succor to the widows and orphans.Besides this the Army’s Muskan orphanage is equally doing a remarkable job in catering to the requirements of orphans and widows. The Army plans to set up seven more orphanage under its operation Sadbhavana
