| India begin series with a win over Pakistan | | | NEW DELHI | Nov 5 With the help of two valuable partnerships - Gautam-Ganguly (82) and Dhoni-Yuvraj (105) - India beat Pakistan by five wickets in the Guwahati One-dayer. Mahendra Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh scored half-centuries apiece to power India to a five-wicket win over their archrival Pakistan in series opening One-day match at Nehru Stadium in Guwahati. The duo shared 105 runs partnership for the fourth wicket. The Indian skipper was adjudged Man of the Match for his fine knock of 77-ball 63 which included eight boundaries. Yuvraj Singh scored 58 runs which included six fours and a scintillating six. The hosts achieved the winning target of 240 runs with three overs to bowl. Earlier, after electing to bat first Pakistan set India a target of 240 to win the first ODI. Mohammad Yousuf remained unbeaten on 83 off 88 balls with seven hits to the fence. The veteran middle order batsman made most of a reprieve early in his stay to emerge Pakistan's top scorer. Irfan Pathan struck in the 11th over of the match, trapping Akmal leg before after the wicketkeeper-batsman had scored 12 runs off 30 balls. Pakistan lost their first wicket with the score on 44. Butt played some exquisite shots through the covers and was middling the ball well along with Younis Khan before an awful mix-up in the 18th over, Harbhajan Singh's first of the match. |
