| Mitali makes clean sweep to become national gymnastics champion | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Nov 6 Giving her best ever performance the `Wonder Girl’ Mitali Sharma has not only become the national champion but has broke the 19 year old record held by Punjab to take away the coveted trophy in the recently held Senior National Rhythmic Gymnastics Champions held at Jodhpur in Rajasthan. Except for one time in 2003, Punjab girls were winning the champions trophy in senior group since 1988 thereby showing their complete domination. It was again for the first time that some one has won all the five gold medals for which the competition took place. Mitali not only made the clean sweep but also guided the state to finish overall third in the team event. So, it was a six (give gold and a bronze) medals haul by Mitali. It is pertinent to mention here that young Mitali came into limelight after her thrilling performance in the Guwahati National Games in which she won one gold, one silver and three bronze medals thus earned the `Wonder Girl’ title from Minister for Sports, Babu Singh. The team that finished third to fetch a bronze medal was comprised of Seema Mehra, Mitali and Ruhi Sadria. “It was the exposure of seeking advance training at Thialand by Mitali, Natasha and Palak that helped these girls give exceptional performance,” Arjuna awardee Gymnastic coach, Krupali Singh told SAN. In fact, the medal winner girls had to say the same story to the visiting SAN correspondent, especially in the wake of lack of infrastructure and encouragement back home. “We saw the girls training for 12 to 14 hours a day at Thailand, so it gives us inspiration to spend some more time in training by putting in extra hard work,” Mitali told SAN. Meanwhile, in junior group, there was hardly any achievement. However, in the sub-junior category, Natasha Sharma was all round second after Disha of Maharashtra clinched the first position. In sub-junior individual competitions, upcoming gymnast, Pallak bagged first place in Rope, Hoop and Ball events, followed by Natasha at second place. The trophy for sub-junior team event went to Maharashtra while J&K finished second and Punjab third. |
