| India, Pakistan should both demilitarise: Hizb chief | | | New Delhi, Aug 21: Hizbul Mujahideen chief commander Syed Salahuddin has said demilitarisation should take place on either side of the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir.
He also said that his contesting of elections could only take place under United Nations dispensation.
“Demilitarisation means, both Pakistan and India call back their forces from all regions of Jammu and Kashmir,” the Indian Express quoted Salahuddin, as saying.
“We have said time and again that we are ready for polls, but if they are held under the United Nations or any other international agency,” he added.
Demanding ‘self-rule’ for the entire region of Kashmir, Salahuddin said that maintaining a cease-fire would not be difficult if the Indian Government released detainees and placed its Army to its pre-1989 position.
Salahuddin accepted that the Hizbul was trying to forge ties between the rival factions of the Hurriyat. These factions could be united provided there was complete demilitarisation and independence from India.
Refuting allegations that Hizbul and Al-Qaeda were working hand-in-glove, Salahuddin termed it as “a part of the disinformation campaign” and asserted that Al-Qaeda had no role in Kashmir.
“I can say with full confidence that they are not present in Kashmir,” Salahuddin said.
Rejecting the Indian Government’s demand for his extradition, Salahuddin denied reports of his arrest in Pakistan.
“Our struggle isn’t only for Muslims, but also for the Sikhs, Hindus and Buddhists,” he said. |
