| Forest report on CM's table; action guess work | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Nov 6 The voluminous report of investigation into the misappropriations in the Forest department in general and the State Forest Corporation in particular is now formally on the table of Chief Minister but all eyes are focused on the follow up as implementation of recommendations has all the potential of soaring the Congress-PDP relations to heightened bitterness. After receiving report from Chief Secretary BR Kundal this morning, the Chief Minister reiterated that the recommendations made in the report would be implemented. The Government had ordered a high level enquiry into the alleged irregularities in the State Forest Corporation including creation of artificial scarcity of timber in the State to facilitate import of timber by the State Forest Corporation through a middleman. Mr. Kundal, the then Financial Commissioner, Home had been appointed as the Enquiry Officer vide Government Order No. 475-FST of 2007 dated 12-09-2007. The Kundal committee of investigation which probed the alleged bungling and misappropriations in Forest department is unlikely to see implementation of its recommendations except ceremonial action against a couple of officers. Any action on follow up to the Kundal committee report can be a last nail in the already soaring relations between the coalition partners. Though the Chief Minister refused to comment on the contents of the report but Kundal Committee report has reportedly ndicted a senior cabinet minister of the Peoples Democratic Party of being a party to the creation of artificial scarcity of timber in the state in a bid to accord benefit to some foreign firms for import. The report has made almost clear that the said Minister had due knowledge of the fact the Managing Director of the State Forest Corporation is an American Citizen and is enjoying the present position through illegal means. If the Chief Minister proposes an action on the report, a senior minister of the PDP may have to face the wrath which has all potential of rocking the coalition boat. However, in case no patch up works between the coalition partners, the Chief Minister may make the report public which can damage the reputation of the Peoples Democratic Party. |
