PoK traders' delegation putt off indefinitely

Jammu | Nov 6
The much delayed visit of the trade delegation of Pakistan occupied Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industries has been put off indefinitely owing to imposition of emergency in Pakistan.
The delegation of traders, which had its visit impending for close to a year, was earlier scheduled to reach Jammu on November 6 but later it was rescheduled for November 9. However, it was yet again postponed for few days on request of the Jammu Chamber of Commerce and Industry owing to the preoccupations of the local industrialists and traders with the festival of Diwali.
Now the visit has been putt off indefinitely. Informed sources told EARLY TIMES that there is no immediate possibility of the visit of PoK trade delegation to Jammu and Kashmir in view of emergency in Pakistan. "It seems to have been put off indefinitely as fresh scheme of things will have to be worked out following changing situation in Pakistan", said a government source.
Meanwhile, a business delegation from the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce, which was scheduled to visit India from November 13, too has cancelled its programme.
After a series of talks between Commerce Secretaries of the two countries, India and Pakistan had recently allowed resumption of trade through land route. Besides, Pakistan had also agreed to allow trade through the line of control in Jammu and Kashmir.
Though the business volume at 1.6 billion dollar had remained low, the two neighbours recently started trade in items like cement, coal, potatoes, and onions.
"The Bangladesh type of road transport was recently thrown open on Pakistan border and we were quite excited about it. Obviously, the political developments in Pakistan have come as a big setback," said a trade leader.
Aiming to achieve a trade target of 10 billion dollars by 2010, the two countries had recently agreed to expand their basket to include items like cement and tea.
