| State plans tapping Chenab water, CM asks for project report | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Nov 7 To cope with the scarcity of drinking water in Jammu city and its peripheral areas, the State government is contemplating to tap water from Chenab River at Reasi and supply it to the city through gravity. The Chief Minister today called for a project report for the purpose which he said would be taken up with the Centre for funding. He expressed concern over the shortage of water in the winter capital and asked the concerned officers to prepare a futuristic project for augmentation of water supply. The Chief Minister passed these instructions during a high level meeting convened here to review development works in Jammu city. A suggestion to tap the Chenab water at Reasi was put forward in the meeting upon which the Chief Minister told the concerned officers to prepare a project report. It was suggested that since the supply of water through naturally available gradient from Reasi was feasible, filtration plants could be constructed en-route to provide safe potable water to people in the city. Minister for Health, Mangat Ram Sharma, Minister for Finance and Planning, Tariq Hamid Karra, Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control, Muhammad Dilawar Mir, Minister for R&B, Gulchain Singh Charak, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Aijaz Ahmad Khan, Advisor to Government, C. Phunsog, Mayor, JMC, Narinder Singh, legislators, Raman Bhalla and Yogesh Sawhney, Chief Secretary, B. R. Kundal and senior officers were present. The Chief Minister called for early completion of Sitlee Water Treatment plants to augment drinking water supply in Jammu city. He also stressed on speedy completion of tube wells and replacement of worn out water pipes. The Chief Minister while reviewing the under execution development schemes and those in the pipeline to upgrade and expand civic amenities in various sectors, called for greater coordination among different agencies to avoid over-lapping in execution of schemes. He issued instructions for preparing a blue book of all schemes for delineation and effective monitoring of projects for time bound completion. He said all-out efforts have to be made to augment water supply in the winter capital and its peripheral areas before the onset of next summer. The Chief Minister said that Advisor to Government, C. Phunsog would henceforth monitor implementation of major development projects under ERA and have fortnightly meetings for the purpose. He also called for formulating a scheme for construction of small road crossing over-head bridges in Srinagar and Jammu cities to facilitate the pedestrians. |
