| RTA Jammu realizes Rs 23 cr revenue | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Nov 7 The government is planning to formulate a fresh transport policy in the state envisaging constitution of Transport Advisory Groups. This was announced by the Minister for Transport Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen at a high level officers meeting here today, convened to review the functioning of Transport department. Addressing the meeting Hakeem Yaseen said that government has decided to constitute Transport Advisory groups to advice the government about better management of transport in the state. He stressed for taking effective measures to minimize mishaps on the state routes adding that the new policy would envisage effective mechanism for checking over loading and enforcement of other traffic rules to reduce the graphs of traffic accidents in the state. He directed the concerned authorities for regulating transport system smoothly in the capital cities of Jammu and Srinagar so that general public do not face problems. Hakeem Yaseen said that following the reformative measures initiated by the government, the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) Jammu has been able to realize a revenue of Rs. 22.67 crore during past seven months, which includes about Rs. 4 crore realized alone by the RTA Lakhanpur. Referring to measures being taken to regulate traffic on National Highways, he said that the matter pertaining to the identification of land along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway for parking slots for trucks would be taken up with the Chief Minister. The step would help to control the unnecessary jams taking place on the national highway, Hakeem added. The Minister said that the government has decided to issue commercial licenses to the drivers who attain the age of 25 years saying that the step would also help to control the occurrence of traffic accidents. He said in future the interested persons would be provided driving licenses from their respective districts to stop the issuance of fake licenses. He said a proposal would be submitted to the government very soon under which new infrastructure would be developed in the state with the public participation. Assuring that the government would strengthen the infrastructure and functioning of the transport sector in the state, the Minister said that steps are afoot for replacement of 407 passenger vehicles in the twin cities of Jammu and Srinagar with modern type of buses. Hakeem Yaseen inquired about the traffic accident that took place at Frasal Anantnag on Thursday causing the loss of several precious lives. He expressed shock and grief over the accident. Secretary Transport Mr. Dalip Singh, Transport Commissioner Mr. P.S.Gill, Joint Transport Commissioner Mr. G.A.Sofi and other senior officers of the Administration attended the meeting. |
