| FAMOUS KASHMIRI DOONGA CRUISE IN THE OFFING TO LURE TOURISTS | | | STORY 2
Srinagar, Aug 21: Undeterred by series of grenade attacks on tourists this year–aimed at hitting badly the tourism industry–the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department is all set to grab its share of market on the eve of approaching adventurous tourism events like Doonga cruise (ride in illuminated houseboats in Dal lake) and Kashmir festival. Director JKTDC Farooq Ahmed Shah in a press conference announced various events to be organized by the department in the coming two months. These programs as the Director said are being launched to "lure more and more tourists besides promoting cultural and regional ties". The programmes shall include Kargil Festival scheduled to start on 22nd of this month and Ladakh Festival that shall begin on fist September and is scheduled to last on 15 th of the same month. While referring to the past success of the Ladakh Festival theTourism Director said, "It has resulted in the revival of art and culture and development of tourism in the State Speaking about the tourism potential of the State Mr Farooq said, "The number of tourists we get is much less than expected." Asserting the uniqueness of the state's tourist attractions Director ruled out any competition from any other state, "We have no competition as for as adventure tourism is concerned" he said. The department as per Director shall have special focus on adventure tourism so that potential of adventure destinations of Kashmir could be fully exploited. He also apprised the scribes present in the press conference that a delegation headed by Deputy Chief Minister Muzafar Hussain Beigh is scheduled to visit Kolkata on 31 st of this month. Objective of this visit of the delegation according to Director is to convince the Government and the people of Kolkata regarding the security arrangements and to assure the safety of the tourists from the state. It is pertinent to mention here that many tourists from West Bengal lost their life in series of grenade attacks since May 25 this year carried out by unidentified assailants in the month of july. Tourism department has also launched a campaign throughout India for the promotion of pilgrimage tourism. |
