Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has called upon the agricultural scientists to have a global outlook to achieve self-sufficiency in agriculture production.
Addressing faculty members and students of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Jammu (SKUAST-J) at its Chatha campus here today after inaugurating the central library, the Chief Minister underscored the need for keeping track of ‘what is happening around’ to be able to catch up with advancement in the field across the world. “For this, we need to have well-stocked libraries for knowledge sharing and state-of-the-art laboratories to undertake research to boost production”, he added.
The Chief Minister complimented the Vice Chancellor of the university, his colleagues and all those associated with the construction of the campus, adding that the spacious and modern building of the central library and other structures which have come up in less than 24 months, exemplifies the possibilities of creating infrastructure on fast track. He said massive infrastructure development across the State like roads and bridges is being created in a time bound manner.
Referring to the significance of a well-equipped library in an educational institution of higher learning, the Chief Minister said “what is important is how many students and scholars make use of this facility”. He emphasized that not only the students of the varsity or Jammu and Kashmir but from the neighbouring States too should benefit from the central library.
The State particularly Jammu division has varied climatic and agricultural zones, as such, research carried out here could also be of immense use to the States like Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana, he said. “Our scientists should never harbour a feeling that this university is only of local importance, instead their vision should be global. Today, European countries as well as China are the biggest competitors in agri-production in the global scenario”.
The Chief Minister said that agriculture, horticulture, floriculture, dairy and allied sectors possessed huge potential for generating employment as the jobs in government sector were limited.
Emphasizing the need for promotion of horticulture especially in Jammu division, the Chief Minister said that fruit plants should not be raised on the fields producing food-grains but vacant and orchards feasible land should be utilized for the purpose to strike a balance between fruit and food-grains production so that both the activities go hand-in-hand. He impressed upon the agricultural scientists to create awareness among the farmers in this regard.
Azad also called for conducting area specific research to increase production of maize and other food-grains particularly in rain-fed areas of the State to achieve self-sufficiency in agricultural produce. “There is also need for introducing double and triple cropping pattern by pooling resources and research”.
