Governor Lt. General (Retd) S K Sinha today visited the site for proposed Sainik Bhavan at Jammu and discussed the project with senior officers. The project is likely to cost Rs 3.50 crores and will fulfill the long standing demand of ex-servicemen.
The land, centrally located behind the Civil Secretariat and adjacent to Brig Rajinder Singh Memorial, has been allotted by the Jammu Development Authority to Rajya Sainik Board. The sprawling complex will come up on 2 kanals of land and will have a commercial segment besides adequate boarding and lodging facilities for the visiting ex-servicemen. They will get accommodation and catering on subsidized costs. The commercial segment will make the Bhavan economically self-sustainable.
A similar Bhavan is currently under advanced stage of construction at Srinagar at a cost of Rs 5.50 cores. This complex too will be having a commercial segment for making it self sustainable, said Brig (Retd) K S Kotwal, Director Sainik Welfare and Secretary Rajya Sainik Board.
He briefed the Governor, who is also the President of Rajya Sainik Board, about the salient features of the proposed Sainik Bhavan.
Jammu and Kashmir has Sainik Sarais at Kathua, Samba, Jammu, Rajouri, Poonch, Doda, Leh, Ram Nagar, Basholi and Reasi, the Director said, adding that these cater to the requirements of the ex-servicemen and their families, who are required to visit district headquarters and other places quite often in pursuit of their various pending cases.
The Sainik Bhavans at Srinagar and Jammu will facilitate large number of ex-servicemen from all over the country, Brig Kotwal said. He added that Jammu and Kashmir has 82000 ex-servicemen which include 60,000 widows. The Rajya Sainik Board is looking after the welfare of these people by way of providing assistance, scholarships etc, he said.
General Sinha hoped that the work on the ongoing projects will be expedited and the new project taken up soon in Jammu.
