| 50 Shops gutted in fire | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | Nov 12 Fire broke out in the main market of Sonamarg and dashed about fifty shops to ground, here late last night. Official sources informed that fire broke out of a shop at Sonamarg at around 11.30 and engulfed the whole market in movements. However, with the quick response of locals and staff of fire and emergency wing the fire was brought under control. “With immediate action of district administration the rest of the market was saved”, a local resident said adding that fire brigades from Ganderbal and Kangan were immediately rushed to Sonamarg. The cause of fire is being ascertained and a case has been registered in this regard. Meanwhile Senior Peoples Democratic Party leader and MLA Ganderbal Qazi Mohammad Afzal has expressed shock and grief over the fire incident in Sonamarg area on Srinagar-Leh highway in which shops numbering about forty were reduced to ashes. Qazi Muhammad Afzal in a statement from Jammu while extending sympathies with the fire victims asked the state Government to provide immediate relief to the affected shopkeepers whose shops were gutted in a devastating fire. The PDP leader said that these shopkeepers have been providing the services to lakhs of pilgrims to Shri Amarnath shrine and earning their bread and butter during seasonal period only. Besides, Sonamarg has been a transit point for visitors to Ladakh and the shops were only source of their livelihood, Qazi said adding the Government must provide them adequate assistance for rehabilitating their business. |
