| 2 comndrs among 4 militants, jawan killed in gunfights | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | Nov 12 Four militants including a Harkat- ul-Mujahideen Deputy Chief Operational Commander and JeM Commander besides an Army jawan were killed in separate counter-insurgency operations at Doru-Dangerpora area of apple town Sopore and Mandian village of Pulwama district in Jammu and Kashmir where fresh gunfights have erupted. It may be mentioned here that in the last one week dozens of militants were killed and about seven security personnel lost their lives. Inspector General (Ops) CRPF Kashmir M S Gupta said that three militants were killed and an Army jawan lost his life when security forces launched a search operation in Dangerpora Doru area of Sopore. He said, "The operation has been jointly launched by SOG, CRPF, 22 RR and Para security agencies," adding that CRPF has been assisting local police in combating militancy in the region. He said that the slain militants belonged to the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen militant group, adding, "The operation is in progress." Last night on specific information about the presence of militants, a joint operation was launched in Dangerpora-Doru area of Sopore in which four militants have been killed so far. An army jawan also lost his life in the gun-battle. According to ASP Sopore, acting on information regarding the presence of militants, police, CRPF and Army launched a cordon and search operation in the area last evening. Official sources quoting ASP Sopore told that police was also joined by the personnel of the CRPF and 22 RR. The joint party launched an operation in which three militants including the Deputy Chief Operational commander of Harkat-ul-Mujahideen outfit were killed. Sources said that the slain commander has been identified as Qari Umar of Pakistan, who was operating from Kupwara to Baramulla and had married a local girl. "He was active in valley since 1999. He was in Lolab area till 2006 and had shifted to Sopore Zainagar area about a year back," said sources, adding "Qari Umar was also involved in number of grenade blasts and used to send consignments to Srinagar." "Another slain militant has been identified as Bilal Afghani. However, the identity of the third militant is being ascertained," added sources. Meanwhile, official sources quoting ASP Pulwama said that acting on specific information regarding the presence of militants, SOG of Jammu and Kashmir police cordoned off an area at village Mandian in Pulwama and asked the militants to surrender. However, militants resorted to firing which was retaliated by security forces. Later CRPF and 55 RR also joined the operation. "A Battalion commander of the Jaish-e-Mohammed outfit was killed in night long encounter," added the ASP Pulwama. He said the slain commander has been identified as Mushtaq Ahmed Sofi, code name Zahid, son of Khalil Sofi of Hanjan Pulwama. One AK rifle has been recovered from the encounter site. |
