Governor, Minister visit development projects in Katra

Governor Lt. Gen. (Retd) S K Sinha today visited various development projects around Katra and gave instructions for early completion of some of the major schemes.
Accompanied by Minister for Roads and Buildings Thakur Gulchain Singh Charak and his Principal Secretary, Dr Arun Kumar, the Governor took stock of the road from Bomail to Katra, auditorium in Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute for Medical Excellence coming up nearby and the link road leading to upcoming railway station in Katra periphery.
General Sinha, who is also the Chairman of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, discussed these projects with the Minister and senior officers and gave suggestions for further improvement and expeditious completion of the ongoing schemes.
The Minister said that a new scheme for widening and improving 12.27 kilometer Pathel-Jhajjar road to make it double lanned is proposed at a cost of Rs 14. 46 crores. Besides this road widening of link road from Katra Railway Station to SMVD University, improvement of road from Bus Stand to Banganga, construction of road from Bhunika temple to the University, widening of Tikri-Katra Road are on different stages, he said adding that construction of 195 meter double lane bridge over Jhahhar River with approaches connecting SMVDU and Cancer Hospital with National Highway also on the anvil. This bridge is estimated to cost Rs 15.48 crores, he added.
Mr Charak said that work has already been taken up on the road widening from Bus Stand to Banganga.
At the University, Vice Chancellor, Prof N K Bansal briefed the Governor about academic odyssey of the University and status of infrastructure development. He was also informed about the various academic programmes and met the senior faculty.
General Sinha inspected the status of work on a mega auditorium in the complex and set mid-December as target for its completion. He went round the Cancer Hospital coming up adjacent to the University and discussed its various aspects with the engineers. Lt. Gen (Retd) P L Sadhotra was also present on the occasion.
The 700 bedded multi-disciplined state-of-art Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence at Kakrial will be first of its kind in Northern India will cost Rs 250 crores without funding from the government or any other institution. Initially a cancer hospital of 200 beds with facilities for comprehensive multispeciality care, with special emphasis on preventive oncology and hospice care will be built. This facility will be developed into a high tech Institute of Medical Excellence of 700 beds and 10 lakh square feet of area in due course of time offering all other super-specialty care. Besides the most modern allopathic treatment being offered, he added that the hospital will make efforts to educate the general public in the catchments area about the causation of cancer and general health awareness.
The Institute would cater to the needs of the State of Jammu & Kashmir and adjoining regions and provide services at par with global standards. In the 2nd phase, various specialties like Trauma Centre, Gynecology, Internal medicine, Ophthalmology and ENT shall be set up. The institute will provide high quality services free for the poor and at affordable cost for others. It will adopt a holistic approach for curing patients. Of the total bed strength, 134 beds would be for regular cancer patients, 20 beds for non cancer patients and 30 beds for ambulatory care. The Institute will have a Community Outreach Block, which would work for preventive oncology. It would also have a 20-bed segment for terminally ill on the bank of a lake close to a tree grove providing a view of the sacred shrine.
The Governor visited newly constructed hanger at Katra Helipad and Additional CEO Mr Puneet Kumar briefed him about its features.
Senior officers and engineers were accompanying the Governor during his visit.
