In a move to further strengthen the camaraderie between men in uniform and the common masses, Indian army is now empowering the women in the art of self defence so that they can come out of shocks and fight militants in trouble torn state of Jammu and Kashmir.
“The Army strongly believes that it is a fundamental right to righteously defend one’s home and hearth from undesirable elements and to this end the Army is forever striving to instill confidence in the womenfolk to defend their homes from terror” Lt Col SD Goswami told News Agency of Kashmir adding that with the given training they (women) can at least retaliate the militant action.
He said that wile training them we are making them courageous to face initial shocks when the militants strike any village.
“Exploring this new dimension against the war on terror, the DAH Division has been on the forefront of women empowerment who organized and conducted a firing camp for the Women Village Defence Committee (VDC) at Jhangar in the Naushera tehsil in the recent past” Defence spokesman
“These trained women and girls can have a better opportunity to join Para military forces after they are trained” Defence spokesman told, claiming that the training would help them in a big way.
He said that such training camps will be organised in other villages also, adding these trained womens are given weapons by the civil administration under the category of village defence committees.
Backed by the strong support of the village elders, 59 women attended the camp with great zest and enthusiasm. They were given preliminary introduction to the handling of small arms which culminated into live firing at the nearby Army firing range.
The women were also trained on how to keep vigil, observe suspicious and unusual movements in their surroundings and explained the procedures of speedy passage of information to the nearest army units in event of terror- related incidents.
Brigadier V K Chand, Commander 323 Mountain Brigade expressed his satisfaction at the outstanding response and congratulated, DASHMESH Battalion for their dedicated efforts and teamwork to make this event a success.
The concept which was initially started by DASHMESH Battalion has now gained ground and is being endorsed by the local populace who are now participating whole-heartedly to wipe off militancy from the region in synergy with the Army.
The spirited participation of womenfolk in protecting their own is now spreading into other areas from the village where it initially started.
