A state level committee would be constituted to make suggestions for formulating a comprehensive grazing policy to preserve the vast meadows and pastures of the state to safeguard the interests of livestock rears.
The decision to this effect was taken at a meeting chaired by Minister of State for Forests Mr. Aijaz Ahmad Khan here today.
The meeting held threadbare discussion on the issues related to grazing lands with regard to their preservation and promoting animal, sheep, goat and other live stock husbandry. The committee being constituted would comprise members from Gujjar, Bakerwal, Chopan and other such communities involved in live stock rearing, the meeting was told.
It was informed in the meeting that the vast grazing lands in the state are shrinking due to one or the other reason and measures need to be taken to save these green lands. The meeting also dwelt upon the measures to be taken for ensuring close coordination among revenue, forests, wildlife, animal and sheep husbandry departments besides livestock rearing communities especially those living nearer to the green lands.
The meeting also opined that changing the profile of grazing land for any other purpose be discouraged and arrested keeping in view the future needs of animal and sheep husbandry.
The Minister asked the concerned officers to work with zeal and dedication and stressed upon them to implement the decisions taken in the meeting in letter and spirit.
Mr. Aijaz Khan said that Rs.125 crore project is being formulated for development of migratory routes and fodder resource management for nomadic tribes in forest areas of the state. He said that under the project creation of shelter sheds, hay staking sheds, water harvesting structures and halting places along the migratory routes would be constructed besides providing taking up measures for soil moisture conservation and controlling soil erosion in the green lands.
The Minister said that Chief Minister Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad is deeply concerned for upliftment of tribal communities especially Gujjars and Bakarwals as evident from recent cabinet decision regarding enhancement of quota of schedule caste and schedule tribes.
Member Legislative Council, Mr. Nizamu-u-Din Khatana, Secretary, Forests Mr. Attal Dulloo, Chief Conservator of Forest, Jammu Mr. Abhary Kumar, Chief Wild Life Warden Mr. A. K. Srivastav, Conservator of Forest, East Jammu Mr. Manoj Pant, Senior officers of forest department and other members and representatives of Gujjar and Bukarwal of grazing committee were present in the meeting.
