As already expected, the Congress veteran Yashpal Sharma today came open to express his anger as he filed his nomination papers for the assembly by-elections as independent candidate against the official nominee of the party.
Sharma was accompanied by hundreds of his supporters when he filed nomination papers before the Returning officer in Poonch. With his filing of nomination papers, the Congress party comes face-to-face with the first organizational failure in keeping its flock together.
Besides Sharma, nine other candidates today filed their nomination papers for the by-elections to Poonch assembly constituency. Raising tempo of the electioneering, Ajaz Jaan of the National Conference and Jahangir Mir of the Congress also filed their nomination papers. Among others were Pardeep Sharma of BJP while Satish Kumar Sharma filed papers as his covering candidate. One Janak Singh is from Kissan Mazdoor Party. Iftikhar Ahmed, Shah Mohammad Tantrey and Syed Nissar Hussain Shah have filed their nomination papers as independent candidates.
Reports from Poonch suggested that it is going to be a triangular fight between Ajaz Jaan of National Conference, Jahangir Mir of Congress and the Congress rebel Yashpal Sharma. Even though the party is making last minutes efforts to persuade Yashpal Sharma for withdrawing his nomination papers but trend suggested that it is going to be a tough contest.
As many as 96461 voters will exercise their right to franchise in this by-election to Poonch assembly segment slated for December 12, state election department sources said. Out Of a total of 96461 voters in the constituency 49551 are male and 46910 females.
They will cast their votes at 135 polling stations, out of which 42 have been declared sensitive and 28 hyper-sensitive, they said. The seat fell vacant after the death of its MLA G M Jan in September this year.
