| Candidate elected from Poonch by poll will not be entitled to pension | | | Early Times Reporteer Jammu | Nov 24 Though the contest in the Poonch by poll is likely to be triangular among the candidates fielded by the Congress, the National Conference and a rebel Congress leader, the winner ultimately may not be a gainer. The elected candidate will be a member of the Assembly for not more than 10 months. And if a hint from PDP patron, Mufti Mohammed Sayeed is any guide the elected member from Pooch constituency may be a member of the lower House for about six months. Yesterday Mufti Mohammed Sayeed had stated that “we left the Poonch seat for the Congress to contest because in 2002 the Congress candidate had lost the seat by 646 votes.” He added “it is a small issue because anyone elected may be a member of the Assembly for about six months.” The elected member and those in the field will have to spend several lakhs of rupees on campaigning and even the one elected would have to bear big financial burden. Another loss is that the elected member will not be entitled to any pension. As per the law a person who remains a member of the state legislature for a minimum period of two years is entitled to pension. The only gain is that the candidate elected from Pooch will get about Rs.40, 000 per month and other perks in the shape of free medical aid, telephone expenses and travel. |
