| Officers Training School- a centre of excellence | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Nov 24 The Officers Training School initially established in 1962 with a motive to ‘serve with honour’ Serve with Honour”, the motto has done a glorious job to train emergency commissioned officers. The Institute was rechristened as Officers Training Academy in 1988 and with the passage of time the Academy has turned into a centre of excellence. For the first time in the history of the India Army, women were inducted as officers and their training commenced at OTA on 21 September 1992. Besides, training Indian nationals, the OTA also trains cadets from friendly foreign countries. The first phase of the Rs 100 crore up-gradation plan of the Academy has been completed.A new mess and accommodation for 250 gentlemen cadets (GC) and a modern gymnasium have been completed while the work on the second phase of GC accommodation is in progress. The vision is to build an Academy which caters to future needs and is comparable with any premier institution of the country. The objective of training is to prepare cadets for command of an infantry platoon in war and peace and also ensure an overall development of his/her personality. This is achieved by training in tactics, organization and administration, integrated general leadership, handling of weapon, physical training, drill, communication skills, military technology and computer application, social studies and international relations. To grain practical and on ground knowledge of all these subjects and concepts, a GCs and lady cadets (LCs) have to undergo a number of outdoor exercises. The training at OTA also aims at inculcating in the cadets moral values, leadership traits, mental and physical prowess, a spirit to adventure and a will to win. The inherent theme of training is camaraderie and team spirit and a commitment to excellence, based on the four pillars of soldiering that is, duty, honour, integrity and self esteem. The curriculum and the syllabi keep pace with current doctrines and technological advancements; at the same time imbibing the basic principles of the professional of arms. The Academy has an impressive tally of gallantry awards including one Param Vir Chakra, four Ashoka Chakra, one Param Vishist Seva Medal, 10 Mahavir Chakra, 11 Kirti Chakra, one Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, 65 Vir Chakra, 70 Shaurya Chakra, six Yudh Seva Medal, 241 Sena Medal and 50 Vishisht Seva Medals which have been awarded to officers commissioned from this academy. In the Kargil conflict alone the officers commissioned from OTA were awarded four Maha Vir Chakra, four Vir Chakra and 16 Sena Medals. The 44 year long and arduous journey of the OTA till date, has been marked with sweat and toil towards a tradition of honour diligently built. Dedication, devotion to duty and unflinching loyalty displayed by the alumni in war and peace, have been aptly recognized by the presentation of President’s Colours to the Academy in August 1990 by the then President of India, R Venkataraman. |
