| 5 Questions | | Dr. Jasbir Singh, Director Health Services | | Q: What’s your reaction over the Yesterday’s incident at Gandhi Nagar Hospital, in which a child had died allegedly due to the negligence of hospital staff and regarding which a case has also been registered in the Police Station? A: Yesterday’s incident was a real sad episode but straight away we can’t put blame on any body. The exact reason behind the death of the child has not been ascertained yet, but an in-house committee of Gandhi Nagar Hospital, comprised of four doctors including Pediatrician, Pathologist, Surgeon and Administrator, has been constituted to look into the whole case. And if any body found guilty of charges, he would be punished accordingly. Q: Why the security apparatus (whose necessity was felt during the yesterday’s rampage) has not been deployed in Gandhi Nagar Hospital despite of its requirement? A: Deployment of security is not an appropriate solution to the problems, as people themselves need to understand their responsibility towards public properties. And the possibility of deploying security apparatus is very bleak at this period of time as it not under our discretionary powers. Meanwhile, we have send a report in this regard to the higher authorities and everything depends upon their decision. Q: Mortuary section in GMC Hospital is overburdened with its job due to the lack of mortuary facility in other Jammu hospitals but Directorate Health Service seems to be least bothered about it. Are you going to look into this matter? A: I don’t think that GMC’s mortuary section is overburdened with the job and responsibilities. It’s there duty to perform the job under the provided conditions as adequate number of doctors and other staff has been deployed there for smooth functioning. GMC mortuary performs the dual function of Education to MBBS students and post mortem for legal purposes. And in near future there is no proposal to establish any other mortuary in Jammu hospitals. Q: Most of the patients allege that in Govt. Hospitals only cheap and sub-standard basic drugs are being provided to them free of cost whereas; other costly medicines goes underground. Your comments. A: These are mere allegations as we are providing basic drugs in all the hospitals in adequate quantity. As far as the cheapness and sub-standard ness of basic drugs are concerned, we are not the party to it. On the other hand, if we talk about other costly medicines then, I am sure that no other hospital in any other state of country is able to provide it to the patients leave aside the case of our state. Q: What are the futures plans of your office to further improve the health services in Jammu? A: Development of infrastructural facilities is very much necessary to improve the health services. So, at present we are specially focusing on the development of infrastructural facilities in all the hospitals and there is a marked improvement in the health scenario of the state. Apart from it, there are some other plans also which would be soon before the public.
