| LIC celebrates Women’s Day | | Women pledge to strengthen India’s freedom and national integration | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Nov 24 As part of National Integration Week being observed all over the country from 19th November 2007, today on Women’s Day a Women’s meet was organized by Ladies Information Centre (LIC) of Department of Information at Zanana Park, Jammu. Director Women’s studies in Jammu University and leading social worker Poonam Dhawan was the chief guest while Joint Director Information Mr. S. K. Sharma presided over. Speaking on the occasion Dhawan highlighted the role of women in nation building and nurturing the future of the nation. She said that the Indian society holds women in high esteem where she is worshipped as ‘Shakti’. Remembering the role of Mrs. Indira Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India, on whose birthday the National Integration week is being held, she said that under her able and dynamic leadership India emerged as a country to reckon with in global fora. She recalled that due to her iron will and strong determination Bangladesh was liberated in 1971 and India was recognized as a global force. She also championed the cause of upliftment of women and down trodden sections of society, which is reflected by the launch of Widow Pension and other poverty alleviation scheme during her time, she added. Santosh Magotra in her address highlighted the role of women in fostering the spirit of national integration, communal harmony and pride in our composite culture. Ms. Vijay Gandotra reminded the role of women from the ancient times as builder of nation and family. Joint Director Information Sharma apprised the gathering that November 24 , which is being celebrated as Women’s Empowerment Day also marks the re-functioning of LIC after a gap of many years. He called upon the participating prominent ladies to work in coordination for generating awareness amongst the ladies about the facilities rendered by LIC for their upliftment. Among others, Corporators Kailash Rani, Lalita Sharma, Joint Secretary Consumer Council Ms Harbhajan and women in large numbers were present. |
