| Valley chill delays flights | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Nov 24 As the winter capital city still continues to enjoy the pre-winter warmth, the chill is on a record breaking spree in Kashmir with mercury dipping to an all time low. Interestingly, as the harsh winter in Kashmir is affecting operation of many passenger flights every day, at the same time the cold is emerging as best scenario for the winged guests coming from various parts of the world. Kashmir Valley continues to reel under an intense cold wave as seven out of 10 outbound flights from the international airport here were cancelled on Friday in view of poor visibility caused by fog, official sources said. Outbound flights of Jet Airways, Kingfisher Airlines, Indian, Air Deccan and Go Air were cancelled due to poor visibility caused by fog, the sources said. They said only one Spicejet and a Jammu-bound Air Deccan flight were able to operate from here as they left early in the day. A special Hajj flight carrying 214 pilgrims was also able to take off for Jeddah in Saudia Arabia. Some of the airliners operate more than one flight per day from Srinagar to Jammu, Delhi and Mumbai. Meanwhile, lakhs of migratory birds are making the Kashmir valley their home as the icy cold climate in their natural habitat of the northern hemisphere has forced them to look for more hospitable avenues. According to wildlife officials this annual migration, keenly looked forward by tourists and bird-watchers in particular, has seen increasing numbers of birds like geese and ducks flocking to the Valley's wetlands for the past three years. |
