Ansari in Srinagar to address SKUAST convocation

On his visit to Jammu and Kashmir after becoming Vice President of India, a seasoned diplomat and old Kashmir hand Dr Mohammad Hamid Ansari today went on an extensive sightseeing, spiritual bliss and joyride in the Dal Lake in the winter capital city.
On his arrival at the Srinagar airport this afternoon, the Vice President was accorded warm welcome. He was received by Governor, Lt. Gen. (Retd), S. K. Sinha, Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, Chairman, Legislative Council, Ghulam Nabi Lone, Minister for Agriculture, Abdul Aziz Zargar, Chief Secretary, B. R. Kundal and senior civil, army and police officers. A guard of honour was also presented to him.
Ansari is in Srinagar to address the 4 th Convocation of the Sher-i-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Kashmir.
From the airport, the visiting dignitary flew in an Air Force helicopter to the Nehru Helipad at Cheshmashahi from where he drove to the Raj Bhawan where he would be staying. His wife, Salma Ansari, accompanied him.
Later, Mr. and Mrs. Ansari visited the famous shrine of Hazratbal situated on the banks of the Dal Lake. They were accompanied by Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and Mrs. Shamim Azad.
The Vice President paid obeisance at the shrine and prayed for welfare of the people of the country and the State. On this occasion dastarbandi was performed on him by the management of the shrine.
The Chief Minister briefed the visiting dignitary about the shrine and ongoing expansion and development works there. He evinced keen interest in the beautification programme of the revered shrine.
Talking with media persons after emerging from the shrine, Mr. Ansari said that the visit to the holy place was a nice feeling for him.
Earlier after his arrival, the Vice President visited the famous Nishat Bagh and had a stroll in the 17 th century Mughal Garden laid out by Asaf Jah, brother-in-law of Emperor Jahangir. Mrs. Salma Ansari, Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and Mrs. Shamim Azad were also with him. In the Garden, the guests were offered Kashmiri qehwa and sheermal. The Vice President also had a motorboat ride of the Dal lake.
