| PDP a credible political force: Karra | | Mufti stresses for making political reconciliation more comprehensive | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar|Nov 25 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Patron, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today said the positively transforming situation in Jammu & Kashmir should not be misunderstood as the indication of the problem having disappeared without addressing it. "We should not mislead ourselves about brushing the issue under the carpet as was done on earlier occasions," he said. Addressing a day-long convention of the party workers from Amirakadal constituency here today, Sayeed said the mindset that - do nothing and let the people of Jammu & Kashmir live with the consequences - has to be changed. He said while the peace process has provided a sound foundation of mutual trust and confidence to build upon, the vital question is how the different players respond to the emerging situation, ripe for major initiatives for the peaceful settlement of the issue. "The Government of India must, with a fresh resolve, work through reconciliatory political measures and through public participation towards the resolution of the State's problems," he said and added that implementation of the recommendations of the Working Groups could be one of the appropriate measures in that direction. "I am optimistic that with the stabilization of the political situation in Pakistan, that is more in sight now, the process of resolving the external dimensions of the problem would move ahead with more alacrity," he said.
Sayeed pointed out that while the holding of three successive Roundtable Conferences and constitution of Working Groups had stimulated the desired process of addressing the internal dimensions of the problem through political, democratic and reconciliatory means, delaying implementation of these recommendations has once again started brewing serious doubts in the political and public domain over the veracity of the whole exercise. "Such dallying approach is not only detrimental for the peace process, but has the potential of negating the very spirit with which the process was initiated," he said and added that the State Government also must, with greater resolve, press for the implementation of these recommendations in the interest of the State's peace and stability. He emphasized that there is a compelling need to make the process of political reconciliation more comprehensive and meaningful and not confine it to mere symbolism. "Instead of giving in to the machinations of the obtrusive elements, the Government of India must, as a confidence building measure, repeal the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) imposed in the State for almost two decades now and speed up the troop cut process," he said and added that some other reconciliatory measures that need to be taken immediately as has been recommended by the Working Groups as well include, complete curb on human rights violations, rehabilitation of the victims of violence irrespective of their affiliation and safe passage to the local boys who had gone across for the arms training and are now eager to live peaceful lives. He said the Government of India must seriously consider an employment package for the educated unemployed youth of Jammu & Kashmir given the lack of adequate job avenues outside the Government. Addressing the convention senior PDP leader, Tariq Hameed Karra said the winds of political transformation have started sweeping Srinagar as the people here have realized that if they want the real political and economic empowerment, they have to free themselves from the shackles of the exploitative politics. "After witnessing the changes on the political and economic fronts fast shaping around them, the people of Srinagar have realized that they can't remain aloof," he said and added that the times have gone when the people were being exploited through divisive and emotional slogans for electoral gains. PDP leaders Basharat Bukhari, Peerzada Mansoor Hussain, Anjum Qadiri and Haji Parvez were present on the occasion. |
