The Jammu University may have brought home unparalleled laurels to the state by honouring Prime Minister of India Dr Manmohan Singh, the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences which had its fourth convocation today was not too far behind.
Though honouring Prime Minister through an honorary degree was a symbolic gesture of highest order, but the SKUAST chose a person who has been featured by the Times magazine as the most influential Asian.
the Chancellor of the University, Governor S. K. Sinha conferred Degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) upon Dr. M. S. Swaminathan, Chairman, MSS Research Foundation, Chennai for his outstanding contribution towards growth and development of agriculture sector at national and international level and drawing road map for a Food-secure and Poverty-free State of Jammu & Kashmir and Dr. Mangala Rai, Secretary, Department of Agricultural Research & Education and Director General, Indian Council for Agricultural Research, Government of India for his outstanding contribution towards growth and development of agriculture sector at national and international level.
However, Dr. Swaminathan was conferred the degree in absentia as he could not attend the Convocation due to busy schedule.
The Pro-Chancellor and Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad exhorted to the passing out graduates of the University upon which the Chancellor admitted 56 candidates for the degree of Ph. D, 217 for M. Sc., 143 for B. Sc. Agriculture, 40 for B. Sc. Forestry and 171 for B. Sc. Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry. As many as 76 students were awarded certificates of Merit and 15 were given Gold Medals for top rankings in their respective areas.
In his address, the Chancellor, Lt. General (Retd) S. K. Sinha congratulated the Vice Chancellor and the faculty of the University for successfully conducting the Convocation that he described as a landmark event in the history of the institution. He hoped that the graduates of the University, as they move out with the degree, would be able to meet the challenges of life successfully and contribute to the development of the country. He said India was today perceived as an emerging global powerhouse of knowledge and economy. This power, however, he said had not reached to the rural areas and called upon the passed out graduates of the university to contribute towards realizing a shining rural Jammu & Kashmir.
Earlier, the Vice Chancellor, SKUAST, Kashmir, Prof. Anwar Alam, in his report dwelt in detail on the activities and achievements of the University. He said the University had released various varieties of crops and strains of silkworms that increase productivity and improve economic competitiveness. He said 10 varieties of Shalimar Wheat, Shalimar Rice, Maize, Moong, Rajmash, French Beans and Shalimar Carrot were released at the national level. He said significant headway had also been made in horticulture, floriculture, medicinal plants, sericulture and animal husbandry sectors. He said the SKUAST recently aligned its courses and curricula with ICAR, strengthening the academic and research faculties. He said that SKUAST was the only agricultural university to have been selected by UGC for establishing the Rajiv Gandhi Chair in Contemporary Studies. |
