| Isn't it news: Mufti-Azad seen together!! | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Nov 25 It was certainly not a chance encounter; the warmth was perceptible as Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and his predecessor Mufti Mohammad Sayeed –after a long spell –were together over the dining table. In past eleven months this was the fourth time that Azad and Mufti were seen together. For their differences known to all and intolerance for each other quite visible, any meeting –even a chance encounter –between Azad and Mufti is seen with significance particularly in the present political scenario. Earlier when Mufti was Chief Minister, Azad, during his Jammu visits, would always call on him. Either at his office in the Civil Secretariat or at the official residence, Azad would always make a point to meet Mufti and discuss important political issues over dinner or a cup of tea. However, when Azad took over as Chief Minister no reciprocation of any such courtesy has been seen from the other side. One can imagine that the leaders of the two major parties engaged in the ruling coalition had been together only four times in a year. The first time when Mufti and Azad were seen together was in the legislative assembly in January this. Interestingly, Mufti had attended the assembly session only on one day. The second occasion when they were together was in July this year when the Chief Minister convened a meeting of the coalition partners to discuss voting for the UPA presidential nominee Pratibha Patil in Srinagar. Third such occasion was the Iftaar party hosted by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi. The fourth and last time the Chief Minister and Mufti were seen together this after at a lunch hosted by Azad for the visiting Prime Minister Hamid Ansari at Srinagar. Interestingly, the National Conference patron and former Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah was also present on the occasion. More significantly, two PDP Ministers –Abdul Aziz Zargar and Tariq Hamid Qarra –were also present on the occasion. |
