| J&K fails to even qualify pool in handball | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Nov 26: Days are gone when Jammu and Kashmir was a side to reckon with as the down ward trend continues in once medal winning game of handball at the national level. In the recently concluded 36th Senior National Handball Championship, Jammu and Kashmir failed to even qualify the pool. Failure of J&K to make it into the knock out stage of last eight means denial of right to play in the important event of Federation Cup. In the Federation Cup Handball Championship only eight top teams of the country participate. However, in the pool matches, J&K finished at No. 3 after the semifinalists Punjab and Chattisgarh. “Most of the boys who represented J&K this time were young and inexperienced. The way the young lot has played, I hope game has a bright future ahead,” part of the team, a senior player told Early Times Reporter. The championship was clinched by Services Sports Control Board (SSCB), who beat Chattisgarh 38-19 in the final. Later, in the hardliner, the title holder Punjab outplayed Andhra Pradesh 42-35 to finish third. Meanwhile, otherwise well equipped handball team of Jammu and Kashmir Police too has not been able to make it into the first three for the third consecutive year in the All India Police Games. J&K team was accompanied by Dev Raj as coach while Brijesh Bali was manager. |
