Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti today said the PDP has not only created an enabling environment for upholding the right of security and dignity of the people but has also vehemently agitated their just concerns and aspirations with conviction.
Addressing public meetings in the mountainous remote villages of Niel, Batto and Khaddi in Banihal area, Mufti said it is heartening to note that the impact of the measures taken by the Coalition Government, after the 2002 elections, to ensure safety of life and dignity of the people, is being felt and acknowledged by the people in these far-off places as well. She said there is an urgency of consolidating on this public goodwill by taking even bolder measures that would have visible positive impact on the fast-changing situation. "The people, especially in the remote areas of the State, have suffered immense miseries because of the turmoil as most of these areas became alien to development during that period," she said and added that the people of these areas deserve more than equal share in development so that, atleast, they can have the luxury of getting the very basic amenities of life..
Ms Mufti said the people in these areas are still craving for basic amenities like sufficient rations, safe drinking water, roads, educational and healthcare facilities. ‘While these innocent people have been exploited by the politicians, nothing tangible has been done to improve their living conditions,’ she said and added that even today most of the families in these areas do not get adequate rations to feed themselves and their children.
Ms Mufti said despite severe draught conditions in these remote areas, the people here are getting rations as per the 1981 census which is grossly inadequate for their families. "With the increase in population, their rations must also have been increased, which was unfortunately not done," she said and added that while most of the families in these areas are living below the poverty line they have not got the benefit of the food, social and job security schemes. She called for a comprehensive survey of all these areas so that the deprived people living in these areas get their due in food, social and job security schemes.
Ms Mufti said given the topography and population of the area, the demand for establishing a Degree College at Banihal is long overdue and the Coalition Government would favorably consider this long pending demand of the area.
Responding to the demands of the residents of the area, Mufti said the locals must get the major chunk of job opportunities in the Sawalakote Power Project. She said the construction of road from Gangoni to Butto and setting up of a Primary Health Center at Butto would be taken up with the Government. She also expressed concern over the complaints of harassment of the locals by the Nachalna army camp.
PDP leaders Murtaza Khan and Farooq Assadullah Mir also addressed these meetings.
