| Cold wave continues to grip valley, flights cancelled | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | Nov 26 With temperature showing no signs of relenting, cold wave has gripped tightly the entire valley under its carpet. And as night temperature continues to hover more than three degrees below zero, temperature is expected to dip further in coming days, as per metrological officials. Today's temperature for day was recorded as 13.8 degrees Celsius and night temperature as – 3.2 degree Celsius. Officials of the meteorological department confirmed that the normal temperature has gone to zero degree Celsius in these days. "The maximum temperature recorded in here on Sunday evening was 13 degrees C - about one degree above normal. And the night temperature on Saturday was minus four degree C which was the coldest night in this winter so far in the Kashmir Valley," the official said. The official added that the night temperatures are more than three degrees below normal during this time of the year. "Mercury is expected to dip further over the next couple of days due to open skies during the day and the extended dry spell this winter," he added. And, due to harsh weather all the flights to and from the Srinagar international airport were cancelled here today. Outbound flights of Jet Airways, Kingfisher Airlines, Indian, Air Deccan and Go Air were cancelled due to poor visibility caused by fog, the sources said. They said only one Spicejet, Jet-lite and a Jammu-bound Air Deccan flight were able to operate from here as they left early in the day. A special Hajj flight was also unable to take off for Jeddah in Saudia Arabia. Some of the airliners operate more than one flight per day from Srinagar to Jammu, Delhi and Mumbai. The dry spell continued in the valley causing common illnesses like fever, cough and cold and throat irritation. Doctors have advised the residents to drink boiled water and avoid going out early morning or late evening. |
