Banihal | Nov 27
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President, Ms Mehbooba Mufti has said the Government must fulfill the long-pending demand of some remote areas on Banihal for granting backward area status.
Addressing a series of public meetings at Krawa, Kaskoot, Duligam, Chareel, Tethhaar and Nowgam today, Ms Mufti said the people living in these areas are facing immense hardships due to the non-availability of even the basic amenities of life. She said the residents of some of these areas have already represented to the government for the grant of backward area status. She said keeping in view the difficult terrain and miserable living conditions of the people in these areas the government must favourably consider their demand for granting backward area status to these villages.
Ms Mufti said the government must also look in to the demand of the residents of the area for removing disparities in the compensation awarded to them by the Railways. She said in most of the villages in the area different parameters have been used for awarding compensation by the railways which is a great injustice to these poor people. She said the families whose houses have suffered damages due to the ongoing construction of the railway tunnel at Banihal must also get due compensation as most of these families are living below the poverty line and can't afford to construct new houses on their own.
Ms Mufti said the locals must get preference in labour and jobs in the railways as they have limited sources of income. She said most of the people in the area complain that they are not getting any benefit from the railways.
The PDP President also demanded other facilities in the area including adequate potable water, electricity and rations.
PDP leaders Murtaza Khan and Farooq Assadullah Mir also addressed these meetings.
