Kiran Bedi retires
11/27/2007 10:27:29 PM
New Delhi | Nov 27
Kiran Bedi, the country’s first woman IPS officer, has retired from police services. Bedi had applied for voluntary retirement and the government has accepted her application. She is believed to have moved the VRS application around two weeks ago.
In her application, Bedi cited “academic interest” as the reason behind her decision to retire.
The top cop’s decision came after she was superseded for the post of Delhi Police Commissioner in July.
A 1972 batch officer, Bedi, who is the Chief of the Bureau of Police Research and Development, had publicly expressed her anguish after the Central government appointed Y S Dadwal as the Commissioner of Delhi Police. Dadwal is two years junior to her in service.
To express her disappointment at the government’s decision, she had gone on a protest leave on July 25. However, she returned to work within days after deciding not to continue with her protest leave, following a meeting with Home Minister Shivraj Patil. "I am leaving things behind and moving on," she had then said.
She had earlier threatened to take recourse to legal means against the overlooking of her claims to the top post in Delhi Police.
Bedi had termed the decision as "not fair" and complained of gender bias in appointments to top posts.
The Magsaysay award winner is known for the reforms she carried out in Tihar Jail and has served in the United Nations.
