Jammu | Nov 27
Coming down heavily on the defaulters, the Bhartiya Sanchar Nigam Ltd, (BSNL) have connected the landline phones of several people including some political leaders and is also planning to debar their cell phones from incoming and outgoing calls.
Despite repeated notices for depositing the outstanding amounts, the defaulters have preferred to remain silent for long forcing the authorities to take drastic steps.
According to sources, the BSNL has disconnected the landline telephone and WLL of senior congress leader and MLA Suchetgarh Gharu Ram for non payment of bills amounting to about Rs.23,000. The sources said, since the MLA has again failed to pay his bill on account of the cell phone, the same was also likely to be debarred from incoming and outgoing calls with immediate effect. According to the sources the BSNL had issued several notices on the MLA asking for depositing the out standings even in parts but having failed to take due cognizance of these notices, the BSNL disconnected his landline and WLL connections some days back.
This is not the single case of this kind some other three leader’s telephones too have been disconnected after having failed to ignore the repeated notices for depositing the out standings. Sources said bills amounting to thousands of rupees are pending against several senior leaders and cooperative society president Rajesh Sharma (Bittu), whose two landline connections too have been disconnected. Sources said a senior Bhartiya Janta Party leader Dev Raj Choudhary’ s landline too has been disconnected for not payment of pending bills while his cell phone was likely to be disconnected today.
Sources said the local employees working at RS Pura exchange, aware of the influence these political leaders yield, had little courage to ask these leaders to clear their out standings or disconnect their telephones. It was, however, due to the pressure from the higher ups including the Accounts Wing for mobilizing recoveries, the axe fell on the political leaders. The BSNL authorities at RS Pura alone has served notices to 27 defaulters for clearing all the out standings, otherwise their telephone connections would be disconnected forthwith.
When contacted SDO RS Pura confirmed directions from the top for effecting recoveries pending since long and in case of non-payment the telephones be got disconnected.
Right from the day of disconnection of telephone lines of the MLA Suchetgarh there had been no contact with him and despite repeated attempts to know his reaction, the reporter failed to contact him even on his cell phone.
BSNL officials maintained that several big businessmen including some politicians were the major defaulters against whom several thousands of rupees are outstanding since long adding that their telephones, both landline and cell phones, would also be disconnected if they fail to clear the out standings within the stipulated time frame. The authorities claimed to have issued notices to these defaulters a number of times but of no avail forcing the authorities to take drastic steps.
