Special Operation Group (SOG) of police gunned down a dreaded militant of Lashkar –e- Tobia outfit after a fierce encounter at village Kather in tehsil Gandoh of district Doda last evening.
Reports reaching here said that on developing a specific information regarding presence of anti- national elements in the area, a team of Special Operation Group launched search and combing operation in village Kather where the militant had reportedly taken shelter. While the police personnel were tightening the cordon, the hiding militants opened firing on sensing trouble and in retaliation, the SOG men also replied effectively towards the hiding militant’s .The fire was retaliated with utmost restraint to avoid any civilian causality as the area was populated. Repeated announcement made from the loud speaker for the surrender proved to be futile, however, in response to surrender call the holed up militants intensified firing with automatic assault weapons and lobbed a grenade with UBGL towards the police party. Last time efforts were made to get the surrender possible by approaching the prominent citizens to persuade upon the militants to give up arms and surrender. But the militants threatened even the civilians of elimination if they didn’t push back. Exhausting all possibilities of capturing the militants alive, a final assault was launched on the target hideout and the encounter ended up with recovery of one body of militant which was later identified by locals as Imtiaz of the same locality. His associate, who is believed to have been hit in the arm, has managed to escape from the spot but reports say that the possibility of escaping from the police in injured condition is remote as the entire area is cordoned. The operation was stopped with the last light of the day and will continue with the break of dawn. Team also recovered some arms and ammunition from the spot.
