Jammu | Nov 28: Shivani Raj Kaith has created history by winning the first ever sport climbing gold medal for Jammu and Kashmir in the 13th National Sport Climbing Championship which held at Uttarkashi in Uttranchal recently.
Shivani was accorded a warm reception by the Mountaineering Association of Jammu and Kashmir for becoming the first climber from the state to win a title at the national meet.
Last year’s silver medalist in `Speed’ climbing, Shivani won two medals, including a silver medal in the sub-junior category. Another climber from the state, Rajeev Sharma also won two bronze medals in `lead’ and `speed’ events in the same competitions, general secretary of Mountaineering Association of J&K, Dr C K Khajuria told Sports & Allied News.
Shivani, a very powerful speed climber, who was favourite to win the title, was, however, unlucky to miss the gold in `speed’ climbing. She led all the climbers from the preliminary round to the semi-finals, but could not control her terrific speed and slipped a little to lose by fraction of a second and had to settle for second place, said Dr Khajuria.
On the other hand, Rajeev Sharma, the North Zone Champion in both lead and speed climbing, gave a good exhibition of power climbing to win a bronze medal in both the events.
Much was expected from Rohini Chib and Shivati Koul in the junior girls’ category but both were unlucky to lose in the semi-final round. The senior most climber of the state, Bhavna Sharma also excelled in the women’s category. But in the face of fierce competition with the international climbers she could not make it to the 5th and 6th place in `speed’ and `lead’ climbing respectively, which is considered to be a good performance by the Association.
The fourth place turned out to be a jinx for the state climbers with Gurmeet Singh, Shivati Koul and Rohini Chib finishing at that place in four different events.
“Overall, it was the best ever performance by the eight-member state climbing team with all of them powering their way to the final round in both `lead’ and `speed’ events.
Students of MNDP School R S Pura, both Shivani and Rajeev were congratulated by Principal of the School, Anil Choudhary on their return today. He lauded the efforts of the Association in providing an opportunity to the rural youth to excel at the national level and assured all possible help in promotion of the game.
The six-day long National Sport Climbing Championship was organized by the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, Uttarkashi under the aegis of Indian Mountaineering Foundation, New Delhi. The state team was sponsored by the J&K State Sports Council.
