| Yashpal stays put, Congress on backfoot | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Nov 28: In a major embarrassment for the Congress, its rebel Yash Pal Sharma has refused to pull out of the contest for assembly by-polls in Poonch-Haveli constituency. On the last day for withdrawal nomination papers, one candidate –a covering candidate of BJP –has withdrawn his nomination papers. Though eight candidates are still in fray but the contest is a purely triangular between Yash Pal Sharma, Jahangir Mir of Congress and Ajaz Jaan of the National Conference. Reports reaching here said that Sharma is sweeping a sympathy wave as he had lost by a little over 600 votes during the last assembly elections. The Congress party had put in all its pressure to persuade Sharma for withdrawing from the contest but nothing could yield results. Two Members of Parliament –Chowdhary Mohammad Aslam and Madan Lal Sharma –were camping in Poonch to convince Sharma and secure seat for the party's official nominee. Sharma said that he had been offered many things including nomination to the Upper House of the State Legislature but he was guided by his supporters to contest the elections. |
