Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has started making strong inroads in the border areas of Jammu region enticing the opinion-builders from these areas into the party fold.
As a part of its program to spread out and strengthen its base in different areas of the State, the PDP today organized a function at Badhoi where large number of ex-servicemen, retired government officials and village heads joined the party in presence of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.
Addressing a gathering on this occasion, Sayeed said the PDP is fast emerging as a credible political force across Jammu & Kashmir that is relentlessly striving for the political and economic interests of the people in all the regions and sub-regions of the State. "PDP's greatest asset is the party's credibility among the masses given its unwavering stand on the crucial issues concerning the fate of the State and its people," he said and added that the public acknowledgment of the PDP's contribution in transforming the State's political and economic discourse is a matter of immense contentment for the party.
Sayeed said what could be more satisfying for the party than the fact that PDP is fast gaining strength in Jammu region, despite being made target of a venomous propaganda from various "like-minded" parties, groups and individuals. "The people have now become emancipated enough to get carried away by any hawkish rhetoric," he said and added that the masses now judge the politicians on merits and nobody can hoodwink or befool them through emotional and exploitative slogans.
Blaming narrow-minded politicians of sustaining and fueling the regional and partisan sentiments in the State for their own political survival, Sayeed said the people of Jammu & Kashmir will have to dismantle all such imaginary barriers and reap the benefits of globalization and economic liberalization sweeping the region. "In today's world the economy is fast overriding the politics, making even the borders between the countries irrelevant," he said and added that the people of the State shall have to come out of the cobweb of economic deprivation woven around them by the opportunist politicians and to reap the fruits of the economic boom.
Reiterating his party's demand for opening all the traditional cross-border road-links in Jammu & Kashmir, Sayeed said as the ceasefire along the borders has now successfully completed four years, the next biggest confidence building measure in the region could be allowing free movement of people and goods along all the cross-border roads including the Sialkote-Suchetgarh road. "Why should the Sikh pilgrims from our State have to travel all along to Wagah to visit Nankana Sahib in Pakistan," he said and added that they could reach there faster through the Suchetgarh-Sialkote road. He expressed optimism that with the stabilization of the situation in Pakistan, there would be concrete forward movement on the J&K-specific confidence building measures between the two countries in the interest of the region's peace and stability.
Responding to the demand of the locals regarding scarcity of drinking water in the area, Sayeed said he would ask the PHE Minister to personally visit the area and take stock of the problem there.
The senior citizens of the area who joined the PDP on this occasion included Kalyan Singh, Suraj Singh, Chowdhary Mohammad Hanief, Paviter Singh, Keshav Singh, Gansaran Singh, Khem Raj, Ram Prakash and Sarwan Kumar.
Senior PDP functionaries including Minister of State for Education, Sardar Manjit Singh, Ved Mahajan, Murtaza Khan, Dhaman Bhasin, Shaniti Devi, Surjit Kaur and Aashiq Hussain were present on the occasion.
