Hardened foreign mercenaries are slowly but surely taking over militancy in Jammu and Kashmir. The police is training about 2000 commandos to fight insurgency and to protect the politicians.

With elections slated next year and intelligence inputs that militants may try to eliminate mainstream politicians, these commandos, it is thought, will come in handy.
“In case some VIP or some official is attacked, they would foil the attack militants very quickly,'' says Ram Lubaya, Director, Sher-e-kashmir Police Academy.
With former NSG commandos as trainers, these would-be commandos have to go through the grind, that the elite SSG or NSG jawans face. Besides a physically demanding training, the commandos are also taught to be mentally agile.
“We train them to use weapons and to fight in adverse conditions,'' says O P Bandral, Trainer at the academy.
These 2000 commandos would later be posted in areas like Lolab, Bandipora and Shopian in Kashmir and parts of Doda and Udhampur districts of Jammu which are still considered militant strongholds. While the state police's SSG takes care of the security of current Chief Minister and former chief ministers, these commandos would secure other important political leaders and visiting dignitaries.
A trainee commando said that the training was a 12-week tough course. “We run for about 10 kilo meters in the morning and evening. We need that training to fight militants,” he added. |
