Chandigarh, Aug 22 India's hockey star Sandeep Singh was today injured when the pistol of an RPF jawan went off "accidentally" while he was travelling by Kalka-New Delhi Shatabdi Express to join the team in Delhi for next month's World Cup in Germany. The 21-year-old drag flicker was hit by the bullet in the hip and was rushed to a hospital in Kurekshetra from where he was brought to PGI here.
GRP Inespector General of Police R K Vaccher said that ASI Mohar Singh of RPF was sitting next to Sandeep in the Delhi-bound train when his pistol "accidentally" went off and hit the player on the right side of his hip.
The incident occured just one station before Kurekshetra. Sandeep was travelling with another player Rajpal Singh.
Sandeep was stated to be out of danger and underwent a CT scan, Station Superintendent of Chandigarh Railway Station R K Dutta said.
Former India international Pargat Singh, present at the PGI, said Sandeep was fully conscious and the bleeding had stopped.
Meanwhile, Indian Hockey Federation said that it was looking for a suitable replacement for the player.
"We are trying to muster up some substitute players and collect them in Delhi, those arrangements have been done. We are trying to get Raghunath, who has been playing very well for the developmental side in Sri Lanka (at the SA Games)," IHF chief K P S Gill said.
Gill mentioned the names of Jugraj Singh and under-19 national team captain Vikramjit Singh as Sandeep's possible replacement. |
