The National Conference President and scion of Abdullah dynasty in J&K Omer Abdullah is the unwelcomed invitee to two days International Conference on Kashmir which commenced in London on November 27.
Those who have been participating in the conference include Hurriyat Conference (M) Chairmen Mirwaiz, Umer Farooq, PoK Prime Minister Sardar Attique Khan, National Conference President Omer Abdullah, former Pakistan Information Minister Mushahid Hussan, Hurriyat (G) leader Nayeem Khan, Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai of Kashmir-American Council.
Many pro Pak and anti India Kashmiris living in Europe have expressed resentment over the participation of NC President Omer Abdullah in the conference. They had threatened to hold a demonstration against Omer, a former Indian Minister of State for External Affairs, whom they charge of being stooge of Indian government. Condemning the invite to Omer Abdullah Qari Tahir Tayyub President of the All Parties Kashmir Coordination Committee said that Omer Abdullah could not be accepted to represent Kashmiri people at any forum. He alleged that Sheikh Abdullah family and National Conference are responsible for the present turmoil in Kashmir and innumerable killings of Kashmiris and destruction wrought in Kashmir for last twenty years. However it was on the intervention of some other participants that Omer was allowed to attend the conference.
The present conference held in London on Kashmir, titled "sixty years of Kashmir dispute—a way forward", which is being attended by some intellectuals and academicians from Pakistan, America, Canada and some pro separatist Indians including the separatist leaders from Kashmir, is one of many conferences being held in foreign lands, mainly in USA, UK and European countries, in a bid to further internationalize the Kashmir issue and put the Indian government in defensive over its stand on Kashmir.
Whereas there are hoards of pro Pak and pro Kashmir independence forums active in USA and other western countries, advocating the cause of Kashmiri secessionists, creation of independent sovereign state of Kashmir, which include Jammu as well or the right of self determination to be granted to the Kashmiris to decide their political future, there is practically no forum in the international sphere, to present Indian view point on the issue. Whether it is Kashmir American Council led by Ghulam Nabi Fai, PAGWASH conference or a number of such platforms, floated by either Pak nationals settled in USA and Europe or by the elements friendly to them, who are actively assisted and financed by the Pak government, the government of India has practically done nothing to counter these anti India moves in the international sphere. Nor have the Indians settled in the foreign lands floated any such organization to present the Indian view point on the issue of Jammu and Kashmir.
In 1989 a move was initiated by a Denmark based businessman, originally belonging to Jammu, Mr. S L Sharma to form a pro India international organization on Jammu and Kashmir, to present Indian view point and counter the anti India, pro Pak and pro Kashmir independence moves and propaganda being carried in the international sphere. But although S L Sharma happened to be a former RSS activist and there was BJP led UPA government in the centre from 1998 onward there was luke warm response to the move either from the RSS circles or from the BJP when it was in opposition and even after it came to power. The result was that Sharma's initiative in this regard ultimately met the failure. This speaks volume about the complacence on the part of Indian government as well as the enlightened public opinion in India and more so the Indian settled in foreign lands, to counter the anti India propaganda in USA, UK and other European countries and present the Indian view point. |
